How to Create An Abstract Background Design
For this edition of Photoshop tutorials for the blog, we are going to create an abstract background design in a few simple steps, starting from scratch. We are going to use mainly the Gradient Tool, so the basic knowledge of setting up gradients is required for successfully following this tutorial.
The design that we’ll be creating can be used for various purposes, such as web design, business card design, poster design, ads design and so on. And our image will look like this:
First, we need to create a new Photoshop document with the appropriate dimensions. In this case, a canvas of 1000x1000px will suffice. Then you need to apply White to Black vertical gradient on your image as shown below.

With the gradient finished, go to Filter > Distort > Wave and set the following values before clicking OK.
Then go to Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates. Choose Rectangular to Polar and hit OK! You should have something similar to this:
Next, duplicate the existing layer and change the blending mode of the new layer to Overlay. Go to Edit > Transform > Rotate 90 CW and then apply the Twirl filter (Filter > Distort > Twirl) set the angle to 138.
Having done this, merge the two layers (Shift+Ctrl+E).
And finally, we should add some color to the image. Create a new blank layer and name it Color. Set the blending mode of the new layer to Overlay. Use the gradient tool on the new layer to apply color. Here are some gradients that I used for the images below:
You don’t need to stop at merely applying gradients. You can experiment with the Opacity values of the gradient layer until you are happy with the colors.
